![]() The arch was completed the following year and dedicated by Sam Hill in a ceremony on September 6, 1921.īuilt straddling the border between the United States and Canada, the arch has iron gates inside its portal, permanently held open. It was framed with 50 tons of steel, and 800 cubic yards of concrete were used in its construction. In July 1920 work began on the 67-foot-tall concrete and steel structure that would become the Peace Arch. ![]() The idea for an arch was not entirely new - a wooden arch was built over the railroad tracks at the border just north of Blaine when the railroad border crossing was completed in 1891, and in 1911 Blaine had built a temporary white arch on its main street to celebrate a fair - but Hill’s arch was to be far more impressive. But the real force behind the creation of the Peace Arch was Samuel “Sam” Hill (1857-1931), founder of the Washington State Good Roads Association. Donovan, vice president of the Pacific Highway Association in Whatcom County, placed a motion before the crowd (enthusiastically carried) that the American and Canadian governments be asked to build a marble “peace arch” at the site to commemorate both the dedication of the highway and 100 years of peace between Great Britain and the United States. When the Pacific Highway was dedicated at the border north of Blaine in 1915, J. Initially developed in the 1930s, the park has the Peace Arch monument as its centerpiece, and is known for its attractive gardens, ethereal views, and open border. But the two are typically thought of as one, and the whole is known informally as Peace Arch Park. There are actually two parks - Peace Arch State Park in the United States and Peace Arch Provincial Park in Canada - and they adjoin each other along the border just east of Semiahmoo Bay. Hand sanitizer was available at the entrance of the breakfast area & encouraged.Peace Arch Park is a 43-acre park located on the U.S.-Canadian border between Blaine, Washington, and Douglas, British Columbia. But they also had a nice assortment of cereals, muffins, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, toast, and my favourite the fresh fruit salad! Coffee, tea, 4 types of juices, even hot chocolate was available! There were a few tables in the food area, but more tables in a separate conference room that had a tv, microwaves. This was a time saver and really nice options! Hot items like sausage, eggs, omelettes, hashbrowns, pancake maker. I didn't try the fitness room, but surely will next time. I loved the decor and the Mexican, salsa type music playing, which motivated me to swim, relax and feel uplifted! Pool & fitness centre are open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, and are in a quiet area. I liked that the pool was warm (not freezing cold like some places). The indoor pool & hot tub was a decent size and clean. ![]() This is a smaller hotel and only 2 floors, but I really appreciated the attention to details for everyone's comfort. I thought it was brilliantly designed that the elevator was in an almost completely enclosed room, which I'm sure keeps it very quiet for the rooms near it. And then handed me a bag with a bottled water & a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie! (made at the hotel) That's going the extra mile for their customers! The front lobby area was very welcoming and had lovely features and the staff were always friendly and helpful! I noticed beautiful pictures on the walls and even on each guests door, which was a nice touch. They helped me know where everything was located, WiFi password, pool & fitness hours, breakfast hours & location. It had a heat light so you aren't cold when you get out of the shower, or you could enjoy a nice soak in the tub. The sink and bathroom was nicely decorated with high-end quality building materials. I like that they had 2 luggage stands in the closet (when most places only have 1). The separate room was very spacious, with the king bed, 2 night tables, tv, air cleaner/fan, and little sitting area. ![]() The room was beautiful, clean and had all the conviences with the kitchen (stove, microwave, Kurig machine, fridge, cutlery, plates, dishes, dish soap, dry cloths, etc), a table to sit at in the living area, with a tv, sofa, and a desk. The room was perfect for me on a little retreat! It's like a mini apartment with a king bed, tv & sitting area in a separate room. 14.51km from Peace Arch State Park I stayed in the Kitchenette Suite-1 King Bed room.
